I have a customer that is really, really good at listening , implementing the suggestions and record keeping. He annually harvests what is required to keep the fishery healthy, and pays attention to his pond. We got him in touch with Steve Ryan who writes for In-Fisherman Magazine. The May/June issue has an article on catching bluegill in ponds. The first two pictures in the article are of bluegills that Steve caught at the pond.







I guess I am spoiled by having great customers with great fish in their ponds. I know I shouldn't feel this way, but I felt disappointed when I caught this one. I was expecting it to weigh more than it did. It's body shape is way too wrong, it's not "dinner plate round".





Who said panfish only eat bugs and worms? This is a 4" Whopper Plopper and this HBG had the whole fron ttreble hook in it's mouth.

Nice work ! Someone is growing large HBG and HSB.

There are Northern BG and RES in there now over 2#. Going to introduce some Condello Strain BG (fin clipped so they aren't culled) this year to change some genetics. There are 14"-15" YP in there too, some 16'+ Hybrid Crappie too. Verified Northern Strain SMB as well.

In-Fisherman does BG articles maybe twice a year.

Scott: Do you have Condello strain bluegill? Could probably get regular cheap through Illinois DNR; but bluegill and redear are my main interests and would love to grow some huge ones.

Have about an acre pond will probably finish and let fill this winter.

Hope to build about a 5 acre pond next year.

Ranger - Scott is doing some experimenting using Northern Strain coppernose bluegill. I think these CNBG are sourced from Nebraska or Kansas.The hope and wishes are that this strain can survive and perform well enduring our northern winters that have short term ice cover. However IMO the best performances will probably be in the northern latitudes of the upper Ohio river. Global warming may help get the strain of CNBG established in the Midwest. More new pond owners may want to 'roll the dice" for this northern stain of CNBG.

I am going to be talking to Bruce about getting some more of the Condello BG if possible. Fingers crossed!

The CNBG that I stocked did not survive. They were sourced from the hatchery's Oklahoma division/site. I will try it again with the ones that are from Kansas.
