Any particular reason the branches are cut in half?

The guy is cleaver and informed.
Cut in half does two things. 1. It makes 2 pieces from one tube 2. It copies a commercial brand and the cavity creates more surface habitat to grow more productive periphyton & critters to boost the food chain.

Excellent work, bugeye!

Only improvement - drill a few 1/2" holes in the pipes and then give your grandchildren a big bag of marbles. AFTER they become bored with your awesome marble racer, then put it in the pond. grin

Had never considered splitting the pipes in half. What did you use to do that evenly? Are they still plenty strong? Did you glue them to vertical pipe to keep them in place? Neat thinking.
