Being in Iowa, and getting ice in the winter. I would install the 2nd aerator in 3'-4' of water depth within about 20 -25 feet of the shoreline and run the 2nd one in the winter to keep an open hole in the ice.

As for the bacteria, I have no idea. The testing that I did some years ago with bacteria to keep muck levels down or reduced showed that running a properly sized aeration system had the same effectiveness as using bacteria and aeration. Using bacteria without aeration was only marginally better than not aerating and not using bacteria. (4 ponds on the same property of the same size and depth were the test subjects).
