Cedars Bill Dance Porcupine Fish Attractor Spheres 3 Pack


Is there a most effective way to arrange the porcupine structures ? I have six. Now in a straight line parallel to shore & at a maximum casting distance on a windy day.

Has someone found something more effective?

I have no idea. The ones I've installed, I did in groups of 3 in a triangular shape.

Central Missouri with 2.5 acre Pond , typical Bluegill / Bass set up , 4th year now and i had installed before it filled 27 of the same thing with 2 foot pipe and that makes a 4 foot " ball " out of them , after fishing this pond with a live scope for the last 4 years I can tell you 100 percent I should have taken all 27 of those and put them back to back and side to side in 1 area , I love that i have them and you see fish hanging on them but not in the dense population you would want to fish over , one more note , I would make them more castable from the shore , not on the outside edge but right in the wheelhouse so they can be fished over with ease from shore

I have not used this exact structure before, but I do know in terms of brush piles you can create small
'cities' that will allow fish to move up and down from deeper water to shallower water. A grouping of 5-6 in a specific depth and then move deeper..Rinse and repeat.

These travel lanes make fish feel safe and allow them to choose depth based on water temperature / ambush points.

Do you clear any brush on your property?

I think brush makes a fine complement to the porcupines. Each tree has a fluffy end and a dense end.

Further, the trees are variable. Each fish species/size class/etc. can probably find a niche in the tree (or brush pile) that they consider the ideal cover.

I actually use hedge fence posts for structure, including a 6 ft diameter, 8 ft tall "pencil caddy" and a log cabin.

It's easier than trying to drive fence staples into them.

What does a "pencil caddy" look like?

A cup (6' diameter, 4' high unused concrete sewer pipe) with a bunch of pencils (a dozen-ish 8 ft-ish hedge fence posts) sitting in it and sticking out the top.


Undoubtedly out of style today, for forty years I used the one my older sister gave me for college graduation - a cup marked "Pencils 5 Cents" - so I "would always have a job."

Let me ask you this... hedge posts are usually a solid 3-4 inches in diameter so it's fairly large cover. What kind of fish do you catch out of these caddies? Do you see an attraction from larger bass, crappie, etc?

Based on feeding and fishing observations, medium and large BGxRES and YP often congregate around the post caddy. It is (naturally) a snag magnet, so I don't push fishing too close too it. It is adjacent to finer, denser structures made from 1" and 3/4" black plastic water pipe (thrown away at the well drillers I passed every day on the way to work) as well as tire structures, 3-4 smaller (12' - 18" diameter) tile pieces, a "Bluegill Condo" (Bruce Condello term for a stack of buckets and 6" and 4" corrugated field tile sections, large pieces on the bottom and smallest on top), and the remains of an old round bale feeder that I got very tired of rewelding.

YP and (dang it) CC breed every year using some parts of all this structure.

I use a coffee cup for my pencils/pens.

I have 8 of these in my 5 acre pond,
3 of them are put in place then there are 6 Cedars surrounding the structure
2 of them are about 80’ off the shore line with Cedars placed in a row up to the short, so placed at the end of a line.
The other 3 are placed in between Cedars, horizontally along the shore about 30ft out, Cedar, Porcupine, Cedar, P, C, P, C.
All of them create about a 5 ft. Ball (so each arm is approximately 2.5’ long)

We just had an electrofishing survey done last week and I’m not sure if the Ball or Cedar is holding the fish but there were a lot of forage and a lot of Football looking bass around them

What's up with the 404 codes on the structure pages?

That page is now 20 years old!

Links, formatting protocols, etc. always suffer some degradation over a long time period. If you keep reading and scrolling, some of the important 404 pages are fixed and added back in later in the thread.
