There's no downside to using the dye providing your main focus isn't on growing fish. If it was, then you have to feed them an artificial food because the dye knocks out the majority of the bottom of the food chain.

A customer has a 1/4 ac pond that they just have for fish. They use so much dye in it that if any water splashes up, it's blue too. Think of a dark Tidy Bowl blue. They feed the LMB and BG in there. Both are feed trained.
