I purchased a property with an old shallow spring fed pond. It was re dug last year to about 12’ with fairly steep sides. The pond is about 3/4 acre and is longer than wide. I’m in Wisconsin so I do have to deal with winter freezing. I plan on putting a 240v aeration system in so here is my question. My power source is in a barn about 300 feet away. Should I trench in airline 300’ to the pond or trench in power 300’ to the pond and put the compressor buy the pond. Either way the power or air line would be run through buriable conduit to protect it. My preference would be to run the air line as that would be cheaper and I could keep the compressor in the barn out of the weather. Would the 300’ be too much for the pump? Burning it out or making it inefficient wouldn’t be cost effective either. There is a drop in elevation from the barn to the pond of about 20’ if that helps. What would you pros recommend? Run 1" low pressure black poly line from the barn to the pond. Put a remote valve manifold at the pond. Neck it down from the 1" to 0.6" or 1/2" self sink air line in the pond. Sure you can run 3/8" line - it's cheaper. It also reduces the amount of air flow to the diffusers, freezes easier than the larger air line and puts more stress on the compressor. Try blowing through a coffee stirrer then try blowing through a regular sized straw. Same difference. Aerating a pond is more than just throwing something in there to make bubbles. Where ponds ice over, you need diffusers in the pond for summer use and for winter use. You shouldn't run the same ones all year long in the same place in the pond. You can drag the deepest ones that are used in the summer to more shallow area for the winter, but I am lazy and I don't like getting cold and wet. Clean air to the compressor is a must - Vertex has washable air filters that are recommended to be washed/changed every 3 months. Other companies have paper filters that you toss away.
