Happy wife compromise:
You can always add a small garden pond near your deck, flower garden, etc. That can be your wife's pond. Put in a few koi and a water feature. To lower her blood pressure after teaching middle school kids, my wife likes a margarita or the sound of running water. I have installed two tumbling waterfalls in her mini-pond. That water feature has a great ROI over the long haul in reduced margarita expenditures.
You can even raise some extra rosy reds in the little pond if you made some suitable spawning habitat, since they will not last long in your main pond.
