Howdy Jim and Jo!

Think it will be a pond filled from surface water run-off (rain) or groundwater?

If surface water, you might want to grab your boots and umbrella and go out during a frog-strangler rain next spring and observe the water flows on your property, and on your up-slope neighbors' properties that you can see.

That will give you a little more information for planning - that is actually a bit finer detail than just evaluating your topographic map. In addition to seeing what water flow a particular location may capture, you may also be able to determine which flows may contain silt from plowed fields, ag chemicals, livestock waste, etc. That is all helpful information.

Good luck on the pond project. You will be amazed at how quickly you can go from completion of the pond to posting pictures of grandchildren smiling and showing off big fish!
