Excellent post Rod!!
I have a 2-acre pond located approximately 250 yards from the nearest electric source. I understand the ecological and water quality benefits of aeration, especially in our climate, but the quoted cost to bring electricity to the pond was $7,000 — not exactly budget-friendly.
Our property has a thriving gopher population. When we first moved here, the black poly waterline running from our well to the house was frequently chewed through. Since switching to Schedule 40 PVC, we haven’t had a single issue in over a decade. Based on that experience, I'm hesitant to bury anything flexible, like air hose, for fear of costly maintenance or failure.
I'm considering a PVC as an Air Line Solution. I’ve seen PVC used in shop setups, running air from compressors along walls with drops for tool access. They include moisture traps and bleed valves — and generally operate under moderate pressure. While I understand PVC isn’t ideal for high-pressure applications, I’m wondering if it might serve as a reliable conduit for delivering air from a compressor to a couple of pond diffusers over that 250-yard stretch.
Is Schedule 40 PVC viable for low-pressure, long-distance aeration delivery?
It's mostly downhill from my electrical source to the pond. It is a viable option but the joints could be problematic if they come unglued. I have to swing by a customers place where the PVC line has a leak. I will have to see if my witching skills are still valid and we will have to dig multiple times to see where the problem is. The other issue with this air line is that he buried electric in the same trench..........
