The way it's been explained to me is that we need to have the water "moving." Ponds with other water sources such as a stream, etc. have natural filtering that way....we just have a standing pond. There is a nearby pond that is similar size, also standing pond w/no stream, spring, etc. that doesn't look all that great, and it is often full of algae, etc. Another nearby pond same thing. I would note however, that those ponds are not particularly well maintained in general; the owners are fairly disinterested.
