A couple of months ago, I noticed a plant in the pond I hadn't seen before. I had not been to the pond in a while, but just went, and now it has spread around the periphery. It's a pain to fish around.
What is it? I have lived here for 20+ years, why is it just showing up (I did lime the place last fall)? How big of a problem is it? What, if anything, should be done?

Also, I usually have a mild amount of filamentous algae, but none this year.

Liming may be affecting nutrient mobilization to increase plant growth. Seems like your pond is 50 years old. Its already accumulated substantial amounts of organic matter and so lime could be helping to mobilize those nutrients.

Apparently, the pondweed thrives when pH is between 5.5 and 7. My pH was 5 last year before I limed it. I guess the probable increase fostered the growth. Wonder where the filamentous algae went?
I would get some better pictures of this plant. It could be something else. Not to say jpsdas is worng however numerous pond plants can look like what is wadded up and tangled on your fishing lure. Follow these suggestions for taking good pictures of pond plants.
