I finally got the time and weather to seine my forage pond to replenish the supply of creek chubs for my bass in main pond and to get specimens for positive ID. To my horror I pulled out 17 bass( some in excess of 7# ) and over 30 large crappie. I tried and tried but couldn't seine a single Creek Chub out. Some SOB that thought he was helping has destroyed the main food source for my LMB. After 43 days of no rains, the stream that I got my original stockings from has gone dry. I'll have to wait for the fall rains to push some more my way.
I guess I might as well attach my former forage pond to the main pond which will enlarge it to 1.75 acres. I have another pond that was just cleaned out and enlarged ( from 1/10 to 1/4 acre) that will become my next forage pond. It will have to wait until spring, but the quaility forage the creek chubs supply will be worth it.

Do you now also have crappie in your main pond?

I was looking forward to seeing those reproducing forage fish.

Ric--- I already have crappie in main pond anyway, so the few remaining after the seining I did shouldn't effect things much. A neighbor above me cut his pond and drained it, Getting the extra water was nice...the crappie were not. I have several LMB around 8# and numerous 3-6#. Between them and my HSB and maintaining my pond bass heavy I seam to be keeping the crappie in check long enough to remove as many as I can. I have a freind who takes care of the crappie removal for me and he says it is hard to catch them at all anymore.

Bill---I am going to try and restart this project in the spring with the creek chubs in the pond that was just completed. You should still get chubs to ID, but will just have to wait a little longer. The growth rates I was getting feeding the LMB the creek chubs is well worth the trouble to start another forage pond to grow them. This pond is approx. 50' from my new home site, so sabotaging it will be quite difficult.

my creek dried up in the drought. There are a few holes above me that still hold water, hopefully there are a few that are still alive that come on down to me w/ some rain. My forage pond is still dry though, so I guess it doesn't matter much.
