As soon as ice was off my pond this winter it was covered in algae .4 acre pond 1/3 of it covered id say. This is my first spring that my pond was fully completed. I’ve been raking some but like everyone else said-it’s a lot of work. Knobbier was your pond any better this spring? I bought some algacide and was getting on here to see how much to use but that doesn’t sound like it will help me much? I’ve been leaving the algae on the shoreline so I’m guessing all my raking hasn’t been very beneficial . I don’t have ariation yet- will that help at all?
Contact algaecide (like Cutrine Plus) is not effective until water temps are 60 deg F. It will kill green mats of algae, and they will sink and disappear, making the pond look better, at least for a while. As mentioned, the nutrients may remain.
My pond ice off was just last week. It has no new algae right now. I raked a ton last fall. Right now, I am removing some leftover dead algae, along with dead perennial rice cutgrass and bur marigold from the shoreline.
I measured phosphorous (orthophosphates) in October and the reading was elevated at 0.06 mg/l. I purchased 3.5 gallons of MetaFloc (not cheap) and plan to apply it in the next week or so on a calm day. I'll get another phosphorous measurement a few weeks after that.
