Not sure if this is where to post this, but figured it doesn't make much difference.

I realize I need a nice really long net / whatever so I can retrieve things just offshore, or whatever comes up.....I'm sure it'll get plenty of use....for instance today when I dropped a plastic structure in the wrong place and it just sat there floating just offshore laughing at me. I used a long branch, but I'd like something slightly more "high-tech." :-) Guessing a standard pool net would work, but wanted to consult you all first.

A spoon lure with a single trailing treble hook is pretty good for "catching" items in the pond. Except of course, hard plastic items with no crevices.

I also think a RC boat might be a good option? I know many pond owners have to fight cormorants, herons, etc. I don't know if it is legal to "harass" them with a boat. However, a boat might be able to herd back floating items that have escaped (in light winds), and be fun to operate when you have kids or grandkids at the pond. If it served three purposes, then perhaps a nice addition to your toolset.

You aren't harassing the birds, you are just taking advantage of all the open water that is available in your pond to drive the RC boat. At least that's the way that I look at it.

BJ Nick: You can get a net that has a larger dia handle, take the end cap off and slide a piece of PVC pipe in the handle (or over the handle).Nut/bolt the two pieces together. Put a pool noodle on the PVC to make it float. You can make the handle as long as you want by putting more PVC/pool noodles on it. I don't glue sections together, but I will drill a hole all the way through the coupling and PVC, then stick a piece of wire through the hole, bending both ends to make sure the coupling doesn't slip apart at a critical moment.

That sounds great. Any chance you could show me a picture of the setup? No urgency, just whenever you get a chance?

Consider an extendable smelt dipping net 1/4mesh. Some are up to 16ft long.

I don't have a setup like that because I have a small boat that I use. BUT I have used that setup as I described, not as a net but as a way to measure out a certain distance from the shore when dragging the boat along for the trip wasn't an option.

Good enough. Discussion around here lately has been that I will need to get a little flat bottom boat eventually. Really need one. Though I should not need a boat to retrieve this or that that I can see right in front of me and it's not that far away! I'll figure it out I guess.

I found one of these that was for sale locally for a couple hundred bucks. Water Tender 9.5

Plastic, won't corrode and no rivets to leak. Double hulled, foam between layers. Wide for it's length and light weight. One person can move it around and load it into the back of a PU truck if needed. Supposed to handle a 5 hp motor, I had a 10 hp on it to see if it was strong enough and it was. I have a 4 hp 4-stroke or a 40 lb thrust electric trolling motor that I use. (or oars).

This summer a buddy is taking his kayak and I will take that to float down the local small river for a couple of miles. I can fit a cooler and other stuff in it that he can't fit in his kayak.
