One of the favored baits we use around here is a drop or two of anise oil in a bowl of liver. A little of the oil goes a long way so use it sparingly. It smells a lot like black licorice and is much easier to clean from the hands than shad, or dough baits.
No catfish in our pond on purpose. They are good eating though...
