Follow up. My pond is still very clear. 7+ feet with Secchi Disk.
What is the proper procedure when using the Secchi Disk? I wear polarized glasses and take the measurements with a high sun at my back. If I strain and faintly see a glimpse of the disk, then I keep going deeper. Thus, I am getting pretty deep sightings.
The exactness of the method probably doesn't matter on a pond with plankton bloom and 2 feet of visibility. However, with my water clarity, the measurements can very a couple feet depending on my Secchi technique. I guess it doesn't matter as long as my measurements are taken in a consistent manner each time, and we are looking for relative changes, not absolute numbers.
Like you said, it doesn't matter as long as you are consistent. I try to measure as you described. Polarized glasses, sun behind me. I do not have the luxury to have the same sun angle at all times because I visit different ponds at different times of the day depending on my schedule.
