I’ve got a new 1/4 acre pond in SW Texas that hasn’t been filled yet. I’ve been reading lots of different threads about aeration and I now have more questions than answers. The system I bought came with 2 diffusers. I thought it would be a simple matter of attaching the 2 diffusers to cinder blocks and placing them about 2-4’ apart in the deepest part at 8’ and turning it on. However, now I don’t know if the diffusers should be that close together and at the same depth, or if I should have 1 shallow and 1 deep, or if I should have the deepest one elevated no deeper that 4-5’ so that there can be cooler water at the bottom. I also don’t know if I should leave it on all day/night or run it only at night in the summer months. Should I even run it at all right away?

Since I haven’t started adding water to it (from my well) yet, I have the luxury to place the diffusers precisely. I’m only intending to stock the pond with BG’s & other sunfish, plus some FHM/forage. Are they temp hardy enough to take warmer oxygenated water, or would running them all day at max depth be stressful to them? All advice is appreciated. I’m a sponge for all info and advise. Thanks.

We might need to know what make/model of aeration system you got to be able to answer.

At Del Rio, Texas (the nominal old stomping ground of Wolfman Jack!) I doubt (could certainly be wrong) you will need to worry much about Winterkill under a cover of dirty ice. (That would be one reason to have a shallow water diffuser, to run by itself and blow a hole through the ice without hurting the deep water 39 deg F "warm" water refuge. But that's a Northern thing.)

Pond shape would also help determine optimum diffuser placement. If it's a simple bowl with one deep spot, I would place them together. If it's oblong or otherwise stretched out, or if there were two deep spots, I would separate them.
