Anderson Minnow farms recommend 2.5" (medium) for stocking brood ponds. Probably because of age and likely hood of parasite. They tell me they don't see much trouble from this and most of their stock continues to produce above their needs even at 8", so I don't know. I stocked GSH from Anderson's at 2-1/4" in 2018 and continue to have massive schools of fry but I also have the vegetation to support it.
