Question for Dr. Perca, et al. - how does this sound?
Hypothesis for analysis: YP who are taller for their length, compared with other members of the same population, are growing faster than their companions.

Interesting theory. Intrigued to hear Cody's take. As anglers we're naturally wired to think length determines growth.

Mr. Theo where did this hypothesis come from? Taller YP individuals are very likely the females. More slender individuals will be the slower growing males. I think the females will be bulking-up more body mass and fat reserves for the upcoming next spawning session.

I have more YP eating pellets this Spring (for 2 months now!) than ever before (possibly more than all previous years put together). I don't know why they are all eating this year, but am just appreciating it.
This has given me lots of YP to look at, from fairly skinny 6 inchers to big ones 14-15" long. There is a subset which are medium sized (10-11") that seem exceptionally tall for YP - about halfway from (what I consider) regular YP shaped to BG shaped.

Sounds like you have a few good teacher YP in there educating the masses. Fantastic learned behavior and eating habits!

Has Dr. Snipenstein been helping you with fish experiments? It sounds like you have either created Yellowgills or Blue perch.  Either version sounds quite tasty to me!

Get a few pics of those exceptionally tall BG shaped YP. If it was during March early April the tall ones were likely big wide body gravid females. After the spawn you might not be seeing nearly as many "tall" ones. Post spawn YP eat very aggressively for around 2 months so you should be seeing lots of the biggest (tallest) YP during feeding times until the water reaches 78F-80F. .

I'm experiencing something similar, but can't say I notice the fish being oddly shaped. More YP this year coming to feed than ever.
I'll be watching this post, as I'd like to say I've got "taller" YP, but I'm not seeing that. Bigger, yes, but seem to be well proportioned in general.
