I spent this weekend at my dad`s lake cottage on Pretty Lake in northern Indiana. The fishing in this lake has not been very good in many years, so we spend our time snorkeling. While doing this I noticed millions of zebra mussels everywhere. I also saw more large redears than you can imagine! I quickly purchased some worms and went fishing! My young neice and I really had fun with those fish! I know the lake is clearer than ever and at least one species of fish is thriving.I am sure the redear are eating these mussels because I saw them doing it. Can anyone tell me when it will be safe to put my boat back in my pond? I don`t think I want zebras in my lake.

If you wanna be sure, then put a gallon of bleach in a 2 gallon sprayer and rinse off the entire outside of the boat...then spray out the livewell and bilge. Make sure you hit the underside of the trailer as well. Otherwise, I'd let it set in the sun for at least a week, with no moisture hiding anywhere.

Sounds paranoid, but those things scare me!

How about a good hosing down at a car wash?

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Guys, according to the DNR here in Minnesota if you leave your boat in waters infested with zebra mussels for more than a day you should at a minimum drain all water from the boat and either pressure wash everything or let everything stand and dry out then leave it sit dry for 5 days. I don't know if their being on the safe side or not but I sure wouldn't do any less than this. If it were me I'd put some bleach in the pressure washer as well.

Gotta get back to fishin!

Martin,

Don't forget to throughly clean your trailer and motor, if you use one.

Mistakes are proof that you are trying.
