My excavator didn't own equipment that he/we/NRCS advisor thought would compact the core well, so he rented a big vibrating sheep's foot roller - kind of like a big asphalt roller with warts and the DTs.
The pond is about 300 yards from the house. You could FEEL the sheep's foot vibrating from inside the house while it was running. I think this equipment does a great job of compacting soil.
