Is it OK to put posts for a pier in a new pond before it fills up? Will that punch thru the clay liner and cause the pond to leak?

If you do it, I would fill in around the posts with concrete. Compact soil as best you can around the posts or the cement pillar. A lot of it depends on the thickness of the clay liner.

Mike Otto, well known pond builder, once jumped Bob Lusk’s butt about leaky ponds. Mike said that they all leak because dirt/soil, etc is porous.
Cody note: Mike Otto the expert pond builder is very correct. All dirt based ponds leak. The degree of leakage is the big variable. Some very well compacted and sealed ponds build with the best clay have very little seepage outward and some ponds built in poor soil do not even hold water for more than a few days. All other ponds are in between these two extremes.
