They will eat snakes for sure….. we don’t have many and what we have are rat snakes

Dave....maybe that's it....we do have a few rat snakes, but the hogs may be cleaning up the snakes. Sometimes we see large snake skin sheds...and wonder where that rascal is....lol

Sounds like you've got quite the project on your hands. Have you considered contacting a local builder or contractor for their opinion? As for testing water seepage, try digging a small hole near the pond and seeing how much water accumulates over time. As for preventing foundation issues, a solid pad is definitely a good start.

Building a house next to your pond sounds like an amazing idea. It's always nice to be close to nature and have your own private oasis. I totally get your concern about snakes though. It's important to be aware of the wildlife around your property and take precautions to keep yourself and your family safe. As for building your house, have you considered using concrete/brick plugs to secure any fixtures or furniture to the walls? These can be especially helpful in areas prone to high winds or earthquakes. I'm not an expert on snakes, but it's good to know that some species actually help to control the population of rodents and other pests around your property.

I get excited we I see a snake of any kind. We have very few of any kind.

Wife and I were on a rural road last year. She was driving. I saw a rattler on the road and told her to move the car up a little. I wanted to see it. She stopped and I got out to walk over to see the snake. She got a little bit excited about that. That’s an understatement. I walked around it and then found a long stick. I used it to kinda sweep the snake off the road where it would be safe.

She thinks I’m nuts but I’ve spent most of my life around them. I really resent the pigs moving in and eating the snakes. We have very few left of any kind.

BTW, I don’t feel that way about water moccasins in my ponds but they are also gone from West Texas.
