My wife and I were constructing two permanent duck hunting blinds on a 7-1/2 acre wetlands project today when we had an uninvited and unwelcome visitor within 5 feet of us. I've learned to carry my "good snake maker" with me here in TX.

After we got home and I could do the research, this is what we determined it to be.

Diamondback Water Snake
 Allen Blake Sheldon

Diamondback Water Snake. Water snakes bite when captured, and their bite is more painful than that of other nonvenomous snakes because of their long teeth . Water snakes feed on fish and amphibians, so they need relatively long teeth with which to grip their slippery prey.

Just glad our two yellar Labs weren't along.

He's a real beauty Cappy. We don't see many diamondbacks around here. We have mostly browns and banded, which can also get defensive if they feel threatened.

I doubt your yellow labs would have hurt him. They are way too smart to do that.
