Somewhere in between/some of both, in my experience. For daytime activity I don't typically see deer more than about 50' from cover, but as long as they have cover on one side they don't seem to mind open ground in the other 3 directions.

I am working on getting a small chunk of land near my house and, if that goes through, I'm planning to develop that around an L-shaped plot about 80' wide and 250-300' on each leg with a permanent stand at the intersection. Based on how I've seen deer use other plots, I think that design could really maximize the bowhunting effectiveness of a fairly good sized plot.
