Anybody have any good advice for deer/upland bird plantings for very sandy soil?

We have a stretch of ground between our healthy tallgrass prairie and the creek that is essentially wasted ground. The soil is very sandy and only supports patchy bunch grasses, some weeds adapted to sandy soil, and some prickly pear cactus.

Our property also has lower rainfall than essentially everyone to the east of Kansas. (I could water with my chemical sprayer after planting, but these plantings would essentially have to be "dry land".)

I know I am not going to get bountiful food plots in that area, but I would be very happy to even settle for half a loaf.
