Last weekend I was feeding fish and noticed that my largest catfish, going about 5 to 8 pounds, have been pretty well skinned up. I first thought water turkeys or other predator birds were to blame. Then I noticed the smaller ones had no damage. I understand that June is catfish spawning time in this area and wonder if the damage could be caused by males trying to get the larger females to spawn. Pretty rough foreplay.

My limited experience with Channel Cats being held temporarily in fishkeeps has lead me to believe their skin marks up fairly easily compared to scale-covered fishes. So I think you may be onto something.
