Many studies have shown that BG and other species look for the best spawning area. They take lots of things into account - silting, nest material, wind and wave action, water flow, predation, cover/plant and other material, sunlight and depth, etc.

If the BG moved beds to a newel raked area, then they were moving away from a less advantageous area to a better spot.
