I think you could imitate stream conditions. For starters I would place a power head at one end of the tank and push water toward the other end of the tank. This would crate current that would imitate current in a stream. If you are real adventurous and creative you could build a small 8ft long raceway out of plywood with inside coated with epoxy or a plastic liner. Water flows in one end (headwater) and exits the other end (mouth).
