I have a customer that is using Vertex diffusers in 28 feet of water.
I have never done a comparison between 1/2" and 5/8". Only between 3/8" and 1". For us, it's easiest just to run 1". Less inventory we have to worry about keeping track of, and less figuring. For us up here, the difference between 3/8" and 1" is huge when it comes to worrying about it freezing up in the winter with any condensation if there is a dip in the line underground too.
No PVC isn't as easy to adjust. While they aren't cheap I've switched to 2" brass ball valves and gate valves for moving water vs. the PVC valves after breaking some of the handles off on the PVC ones.
