Hate to tell you this ML, but I was at my place yesterday and with the water so low I have a lot of trees exposed. This is the first time I have seen them. I saw about 4 of them in the morning land in the middle of the lake on top of tree stumps. Took out the 22 and fired away, they flew off, but I am sure they will be back. The cooler weather has cleared the water and the bass are stacked up by the shore to catch the warm sun. Easy to catch for me and I hope not the birds.

That's bad news, bad news indeed. What do you plan to do? For us remote folks, there just isn't much that will work...but I've got a cannon on the way, maybe it will have some positive effects.

I've even considered a live camera set up to observe the ponds 24/7 remotely via the 'net, but haven't come across a reasonable approach for that as yet...still looking.

Has anyone ever tried a bird crazy black lab for patrolling their pond? If there are no standing trees in the water it might work in a small pond.

The problem that a lot of us have is that we do not live 24/7 at the location of the pond. I can dispatch them very effectively during weekends, but during the week, they clean up. They also learn very quickly when you are in the area and when not in the area. It's a heck of a problem...even if I do protest too much.

I know ML, one of the nice things about NE is that comorants are not much of a problem here. I was checking my bird book last night and it looks like the double crested comorant likes to winter primarily in TX, LA, and MS. Ponds along both the east and west coasts probably have problems as well. In all there a 6 species of comorants in North America.

Just had a chance to catch up, I asked my neighbor to check my pond about 7:00am to 9:00am and keep a shot gun handy. I let him run his cattle on my place so he is happy to do so. I hope we get some rain to fill up my lake and water tables soon. I hope I have the right bird these seem to make a loud grunt noise.

Now that's a great neighbor! To be sure of the right bird:

If it dives under water for long periods, has a long neck (like a goose), struggles to get airborne, and returns to fly back over you right after getting airborne...you may have water turkeys.

If it sets in dead trees picking it's teeth and defecating remains of your fish....you may have water turkeys.

If your fish have slice marks on their "shoulders" and some are dead as a result...you may have water turkeys

If you see all your fish trying to congregate under a pier for protection...you may have water turkeys.

And last but not least...if you see a wild man named Meadowlark chasing after them...you may have water turkeys.
