Has the formula changed for Purina? About 50% of the feed now sinks. I don't believe it to be moldy as I have experience with bad feed and it certainly doesn't smell like that. My containers are dry (I have chicken/pig/dog/bird seed) in same type of containers. Also I need some catfish. Any dealers in SW Florida, hour south of Tampa?

Which Purina feed? Gamefish Chow or Aquamax?

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

You might check the age of the feed. I've had that problem when it dries out. Or, you might have gotten a bad batch.

I noticed that the Zeigler feed I'm using has 10 or 15% of "sinkers" in it and it's a new bag. I was kind of glad because the HSB I have caged don't swarm the top of the water but hang out at the bottom of the cage.

Chip,

A few sinkers is nothing to worry about. I've had that happen in a few other brands too.

Toby, if you are dissatisfied, return it. Purina doesn't want bad press, mad customers or adverse publicity. Sinking feed is generally useless and a waste of money.

Dave,

I respectfully disagree. Although floating feed is good because we can watch the feeding response of our fish to determine any health problems, the really big fish producers prefer sinking feed because it is cheaper. If you purchase feed by the ton that really makes a difference.

I have also noticed my largemouth bass prefer sinking feed. (Maybe they're lazy?) However unless the water clearity is high and I can observe them inhale the pellets I prefer the floating.

Cecil, thanks for correcting me. I got the information from this web site from a source that I never argue with. I had no idea that is was used by the big boys.

Toby, I had the same problem with a couple bags of the Purina Gamefish Chow. I called Purina and they told me to take the bag back to the dealer and get another bag. I returned them for another bag. Since, I have not had a problem.

There may be 2 formulas. I was told last wk. by a feed store owner that Purina makes a multiple size chow that some sinks and some floats. Dont know about the designation on the bag, tho.
I think if some sinks slowly, more fish can feed. I like the idea.

BM,

Remember my posts about Rangen feeds....guess what I saw when I walked into their warehouse recently? Bags and bags of Purina Game Fish Chow.

Manufactured right here in Angelton, Texas.

Next time you are going to Miss, send me an e-mail and I will pick up some of the Rangen high protein feed for you if you like. They say it keeps three months at least.

I have been using Purina game fish chow called "Growth and Vigor" it has 3 size pellets and it all floats. All my fish love the stuff and it keeps well in plastic tubs.

ML, I remember the post about the Rangen/Purina link. I go thru there heading down the coast to Pt.Comfort or C.C. Just can never remember to stop by. I will definitely keep it in mind when I put in channels this fall.

I get my feed from a local mill, 35% protein. Maybe 10% sinks and at first, it bothered me. Now, after feeding it for a few weeks I noticed during one particularly calm evening that even the sinkers don't go too deep before something grabs 'em. I don't think anything goes to waste if you don't overfeed...
