I'm biting the bullet and getting ag lime spread into my pond for extreme muddy water and PH is only 6.2 and I have had a dozen 7-9 inch bluegill floating and just 2 days ago a 18 1/2 inch lmb that weighed just under 4 pounds was floating!! Lot's going on...extreme heat, pond near 4 foot low, NO visibility because of suspended clay, and algea blooms dying off. Question....I have a man that will back a truck designed to spread aglime in pastures to my pond. He can spread 5 tons in one load. He said it will broadcast about 50 foot across and way out in pond. I won't be able to cover the complete pond because of access. Should this work? Pond being this low is probably only about 1 1/2 acres. What should I expect with 5 tons spread out in both ends but not so much down the sides? Am I waisting my money? Should it help the PH? My bottom aeriation still runs 24 hours a day here in deep east Texas.

4 ton/acre is typical crop land application rate on the acidic soils that we have here in the midwest. Not sure how that relates to soils in DET, but with 6.2ph I can't imagine that 10 ton in a 1.5ac pond would do anything but help it out.
Maybe think about having another load or three spread on the watershed near your pond, and let Mother Nature put it in the pond when the monsoon comes.
I put ~100 ton of crushed limestone in my 1/3ac puddle before it filled.

I hope it helps because thats what I did, backed a lime truck down to the edge of the water and let er eat. mine is all woods so I cant lime the surrounding fields which I agree would be a good idea but I am planning on dumping loads of ag lime in a couple ditches that run into the pond whenever it rains, make the water run across it and erodes it into the pond.
All the really good ideas I've ever had came to me while I was milking a cow.

gehajake, details please, pond size, how much ag lime did you put in? Why did you put it in? Was your water chemestry off or is your's real muddy like mine? How long has your aglime been in the pond now? How far out did your spreader send the product?

I have seen that flushing water across agg lime works better than using a spreader truck. If you have a ditch or a washout area, spread lime along the bottom and then pump water across the lime and back into the pond. The agg lime will not desolve instantly so repeating it over and over again will raise the pH faster than the lime just setting on the ponds bottom. Maybe a trash pump sucking water out of the pond and then over the lime and back into the pond works pretty good.
Do not judge me by the politicians in my City, State or Federal Government.

Several ways will work. Truck spreader , boat spreader/pump , TGW's method and by shoveling some in. Lime should help with pH and may help with clarity. You won't add to much ag lime - 5 tons will be good. pics of lime truck at work.

Well I talked my local guy into bringing me 5 tons on his aglime spreader truck and he spread it at both ends of my pond!! Perfect timing because a good bit is on the bank that didn't make it in the pond but is on a hill and will wash down with rain. Here in east Texas we are expecting 3 days of rain from tropical storm/hurricane coming in. I NEED RAIN!!. It has been about 30 hours since putting the aglime in and my Ph has risen from 6.2 to 7.2 in the center of the pond. Not where they dumped the lime. My alkalinity went from 30 to about 45. Hardness still reads 0. My 3 diffusers are still located in my deepest part of the pond and run 24 hours a day. That should help "spread" the lime water. But some good rains are going to help a bunch. I am at no risk of going over spillway right now because I'm heading towards being 4FOOT LOW!! How fast should I have expected the ph to change? Is a day or two enough time?

Hope you get the rain. I am running around 4' low myself. I put in aeration at almost full pool and two diffusers was already pushing it - now I know I definitely need three. I am not getting the coverage with the pond this low. I swear there is a force field around my land that diverts all rain. We are between two towns - Brenham and Bellville - both towns have been getting dumped on every time there is a cloud and we have gotten about 3" in all of July and August. Stay safe and hope you get lots of rain but no accompanying issues.

Recently got 5 inches of rain. But it came slowly. That's what I call a farmers rain and did dang little for my water holes. I have 2 actual ponds with fish and 3 small leaky holes in the ground, no fish, for the pigs to roll around in.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Pat, I'm butt deep in hogs. Grandson and buddy trapped 20 at one time about 4 or 5 months ago. About a month ago, I was on a 4 wheeler heading from the back of the place to the house. I saw a sow step into the "road" about 40 yards from me. She just stood there looking at me and was joined by about 10 half grown ones. Got curious and eased the 4 wheeler forward. I got about 4 feet from them. No fear of me or the noise of the idling 4 wheeler. Scott said shoot them. I can't shoot an animal that is smiling at me.
About 3 months ago, Wife and I were on 4 wheelers tossing pellets at our back pond about a mile from the house. About 25 pigs wandered up and some went swimming.
I have 4 small water holes, not big enough to be called ponds. They stay muddy from pigs rolling around in them.
What we call the front yard (no lawn) is rooted up when I'm not there.
Boys filled deer feeders a week ago. I was there Sunday and took a 4 wheeler ride. Looks like only pig tracks but hadn't rained recently enough for me to tell.
Yessir, I have pigs.

Sorry, didnt see your post, the truck applying lime was a identical picture, (different color truck), to the one ewest posted above, actually it could be my pond in the background, I had just built a 16A pond and had not tested any water but I had a lime truck spread lime on my deer green fields and just took what was left and backed him down to the pond and just broadcast it, doubt that it had much effect on the area but I figured it wouldnt hurt. probably about 8 to 10 Ton. my pond is a little dark, I think its mostly tannins from brush piles and trees that I didnt get out of the pond before the water got up too high, some standing timber in the shallows and numerous oak brushpiles and countless stumps. Ive always heard its bad but the feeder fish are doing amazingly well, just ready to stock predators this fall.

Some effect upon application but most over time (6 months). Your situation is a bit different due to low water and big rains coming.
