I always thought it had to do with the depth. A five acre body of water that was only 7 feet deep was a pond, but a five acre body of water that went twenty feet deep was a lake. Maybe that was from personal experience as a kid, I remember diving off rocks into lakes , but couldn't do that into ponds.
