my pond is about 1/2 acres and is about 7 feet deep in most areas and about 3 1/2 to 4 feet deep at the most shallow areas.it is still filling up with water slowly due to the fact we have not had much rain recently in eastern north carolina. i checked my ph level, ammonia, and nitrate level about 1 month ago and all levels were very good according to the test kit i purchased from the local pet store. i currently have a vertex aerator that has a messed up fan on it probably caused by ups shipping and is not aerating as well as it should.luckily i called the company i purchased it from and they are going to ship me a new fan in the next couple of days so within a week the aerator should be working properly.i stocked about 350 native bluegill and 150 redears 50 channel cats and 7 pounds of flatheads about a month ago. when i went out this morning to look at the pond i noticed some green like moss around some of the edges of the pond and some also closer to the middle of the pond.is this something i should be worried about or do you think once my aerator is working properly i will be ok.can someone please give me some suggestions as to how to handle this situation. Thanks for any help.

newpond,Not sure what Vertex unit you have (Im guessing an Air1) but if it is the cooling fan you are refering to the output of the Brookwood pump will be the same with or without the cooling fan. Moss (algae) is a part of any ponds makeup. Aeration will reduce the nutrients that algae thrive on but will not eliminate it.Desired elimination of algae is a pond owner by pond owner thing.Algae is part of the "life" of the pond and is a good thing managed correctly. Your pond is new and still adjusting. You may also find your water turbid with that many cats in that size a tank.Go through the many posts on new ponds and aeration to get the most out of your pond,Good Luck Ted

with cooler temps in your area you should be fine for now. You may have had the algae even with the aeration system. Like stated it reduces not elimates all nutrients. You should be fine.

From my knowledge, aerators can have some impact on the phosphorus compounds that are being recycled from decay of bottom sediments, especialy in presence of anaerobic conditons. BUT I have never seen research or proof that aerators can decrease or suppress the dissolved nutrients (nitrogen or phosphorus) that already occurs in water flowing or rinsing into a pond or lake. Under these conditions aeration (bubbling or spraying) has little impact to stiffle the algae growing affects of nutrients. I think this explains why some see algae decreases with aeration whereas others see little impact from an aerator. Anyone know of research that shows otherwise?..
