Is this common to have defects in fish?

Is this a problem or common disease?

I have caught one perch like this too but put it off as the GBH nailed it and it lived. The fish still feed and swim normal but maybe more to the right. Tee he he.

The fish have a crook in their tail from their anal fin back. All have had the same crook in the same direction.

I have seen that same condition in wild SMB on the Tennessee river systems. Don't know what causes it tho. I always thought it may be some kind of genetic trait.

I know in the aquarium world this condition is often referred to as Fish TB. While not actually TB, it is a closely related mycobacterium, I think. No idea if that's what this is, just know that this, or a similar condition, occurs fairly often in the fish trade.

I see it occasionally in LMB, not sure what causes it.

Some say it's a problem when the eggs hatch.

What % of your fish exhibit this condition?

Someone here told me (several years ago) might be vitamin C deficiency. I quit saving pellets over winter (vitamin C breaks down) and haven't seen it in quite awhile...of course I had to quit pellet feeding this year as my (new this past spring) grass carp were getting lazy and eating pellets instead of coontail. Just a thought..

Could this be whirling disease?

Reading on whirling disease and it states salmonid fish. The tails do not turn black. I have seen this in some perch too in our pond.

Could the parasite live through the making of the feed?
Could the minnows and perch be getting it from the feed but not allowing the cycle to be complete for the parasite?
