4 acre pond 32 ft deep within East Texas (Livingston) timber ranch. Filled (to the top of an almost finished dam) by Hurricane Harvey 9/17. Stocked with FHM, CNBG, RES 10/17. Added 35lbs RSC 3/18. 400 N LMB fingerlings 6/18
I�d say bullfrog, unless you�ve got incredibly small hands. I hope this doesn�t go political.
12 yr old pond, 1 ac, 15' deep. RES, YP, GS, FHM (no longer), HBG (decreasing), SMB, and HSB (only two have been seen in 5 yrs) I think that's about all I should put in my little pond. Otter attack in 2023.
I will say probably bullfrog. If they overwinter in the pond and become frogs the next year, definitely bullfrog. Bullfrog tadpoles will get up to six inches long by the time they start to develop legs.
They are relatively large and seemed to be in the pond over winter. They look like the legs are beginning to form. In the picture you can see a slight nub starting to form at the base of the tail.
Further research appears to confirm that they are green frog tadpoles. I did have an opportunity to add some bullfrog tadpoles and they are significantly larger. See attached picture for the size difference. Also the spots on them are more defined on the bullfrog.
I do not think it is an American Bullfrog tadpole based on coloration. It also differs from typical Green Frog tadpoles I see routinely in ponds. Others to consider include one of the leopard frogs as well as the Bronze Frog that is a close relative of the Green Frog. Location would be nice to know as other species could be considered, especially southern kin to the American Bullfrog.
