Hi,
my 1/2 acre pond is in northern arizona in the pine trees. it was dug about 2 years ago and is finally full with no leaks. But one major problem the water has been always muddy!!!!
it is generally 13 ft deep and in some areas 8 to 2 feet deep.
anyone know why it is so darn MUDDY?

(btw visiblity is about 2inches)

Muddy water is usually suspended particles of clay. Look under the heading "Muddy Water". Lots of discussion there that may help you determine the cause and what to do about it.

alot of conditions create muddy water , best to find what the cause is first. runoff, just fillling, storms, fish you didn't put in or what ever. lot of tests to do.

Gary, the first thing to do is go to the drug store and get a little jar of alum for four bucks or so. Stand two big, clear jars of pond water side by side and add a couple of tablespoons of the alum to one. If the water clears in a day or so you have suspended clay and if you search that phrase you'll find the whole program laid out.

Where does your water come from? Is it a small well? Or, is it from a small spring? Or runoff from rainfall?
That could make a difference how to decide what to do. It's not tough to clear muddy water. Alum will do it. Often, so will gypsum. Maybe hay, too. But, the trick is to keep it clear. I have cleared a number of ponds over the years, but most need maintenance to keep them clear.

my 1/2 acre pond is supplied water from runoff.
even if it rains 1/4 of a inch, probably 4 inches of runoff end into my pond including everything it can take with it.
