Pond Boss Forums GENERAL QUESTIONS Water chemistry Is Barnlime ok to use instead of Aglime?

I see Tractor Supply has it for $2.99 for 50 lbs, I can just load 10 or so bags every time I go to the pond.

I will go to TSC and read the bag in the next few days but thought someone here would know the answer.

I don't think it's like hydrated Lime but want to make sure.

I'm gonna show my ignorance here, but I always thought Barn Lime, Dolomitic Lime, and AgLime were all the same thing... crushed limestone.

The "AgLime" I bought from TS was about $6 or $7 per 50 lb bag and was pulverized into a very, very fine powder. I'm not familiar with the $2.99/bag stuff you are talking about, but maybe it's just crushed at a different consistency?

FWIW, I thought $7/50lb was a pretty decent deal for the amount I bought... I'm looking forward to getting schooled on the differences here by the PB smart people.

If it is hydrated lime it is extremely fast acting lime.

If it is hydrated, the danger is changing the water pH too quickly. Fish do not take to fast pH changes and it can stress or even kill them.

If you choose to use such lime it would have to be done very carefully in small amounts at a time to avoid killing fish.

If on the other hand it is just ag lime it would be fine.

Does not really say much on the bag. I would think if it is hydrated lime it would have a warning on the bag about not getting it into the eyes. Hydrated lime is pretty caustic.

Edit: If you read the reviews, it appears it is just finely ground limestone. Hydrated lime might be dangerous to have around the animals???
