I have seen a few that are maybe 3 inches but are still to small to swallow a whole piece of feed. They still peck around at it. To my untrained eye that looks like very very good growth. I'm ready for mine to get big enough to venture out and boil the water at feeding time. Do you have any tricks of the trade you could share?

This is all based on the size and shape of the gill flap (opercle). These appear to be immature fish so sexing them is risky for accuracy. I am not familiar GSF from LA. It is likely a female with a belly full of eggs, although the main spawn season for GSF in LA is past. I doubt it is a hybrid and I know it is not even close to an F1 generation HBG. I would have cut it open to verify eggs or a belly full of pellets.
