Is there a way I can count scales or determine if a bass is a Florida strain variety or even a F1 versus a Northern strain. Before I introduce some pure strain Floridas to shape the genetics for larger bass, I'd like to determine what I actually have. The fish were originally stocked in the late 1980's and no one can tell where the fish came from orginally. Any ideas on bass ID please??? The lake is in Southern California - not San Diego County.

I bringing this topic to the top because I am facing the same issue. I need to introduce new genetics to my pond but want to be able to tell more of what I have and after I stock Florida's I want to make sure that I don't take those out for a while.

I've posted a little bit of information in this discussion here . Basically I don't know of a reliable way to do what you're talking about short of tagging or marking the stocked bass. Maybe someone else has a better idea.
