Pond Boss Forums INTRO Questions & Observations copper sufate, safe or unsafe?

I have a 5 acre pond built last summer and have bluegill, channel cat and grass carp stocked last fall. I plan to add bass late this month [April] or the first part of May.
My pond has the dreaded algae along the banks and on some ridges in the pond. Here in the Delta of Ms. we have a lot of catfish farms.
I asked one of the farmers what to treat the algae with that would be safe and he recommended granular copper sulfate applied sparingly to the algae itself not to the entire pond. He assured me it was safe.
I would like to be sure that my bluegill would not be at risk. Also, I plan to treat before my bass are stocked.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I would use a chelated copper compound instead of copper sulfate. Cutrine plus is a very common brand. It comes in granular or liquid and either one will work for your application. Granular might be easiest for you if applying from the bank or if you don't have a larger sprayer.

The advantage of these products is that they don't use as much copper as straight copper sulfate to accomplish the same task.

i've used cultrine plus several times including several weeks ago,it works very good.i but the liquid form and pay $29.00 per gallon at local feed store.it takes about 2 days to kill.
