Gang, I'd like to pick up a siphon for transferring gas and diesel (I know I need separate siphons) to my tractor, riding mower, ATVs, etc. There are ton of them out there but few get favorable reviews. I don't want an EPA friendly device - I want something that moves a 5 gallon container quickly into my tanks.

I can't find any good DIY projects online that look like they'll do what I want without the need to suck on the hose to start the flow. I want my wife and kids to be able to use this without any worry that they'll do it wrong.

Not being a terribly mechanical guy at this stage of my life, I can almost see what I need in my head but I can't quite get all the synapses in my brain to fire at the right time and let me close the circuit on this concept. So, do you guys have any particular product you've found that you like or have you designed your own siphon setup that I can replicate?

Consider using a boat tank fuel line with bulb. I have moved a lot of fuel that way.

The above mentioned siphon works very well. You just put the check valve end in the container and move it up and down and it starts the siphon very easy to use.

12 volt auto fuel pump from wrecking yard is what my boat repair guy uses.

Thanks for the ideas, guys. I've read some reviews on the jiggler device that say it doesn't flow very fast and I'm thinking performance would end up being a slow as the ridiculous anti-spill spouts on new cans. I've modified all the spouts on my cans but no one else can lift them to fill fuel tanks so I wanted a siphon to help my wife and kids when I'm not here.

Highflyer, that boat fuel line is exactly what I was thinking had to be out there but I never saw one in my searches, probably because I wasn't aware that was a boating-oriented siphon. I may grab one of those and give it a whirl.

you mentioned they could not lift them to fuel your machines - but they will have to lift them above the fuel tank anyway to get a siphon going. You can't siphon uphill. This would pump the fuel but doubt you would be happy with it:

I will be needing a way to fuel two tractors and a dozer at my upcoming pond project. Looking at a 12 volt pump system like this:

X2 on Redonthehead's and Dave Davidson's solutions. I have a couple of these setups I use around the farm. I took a general purpose 12 volt electric fuel pump and mounted it to a 2 X 6 with a plug that'll go into my ATV aux power port and a toggle switch. Probably have about $50 bucks all told in it and I can use it to move fuel all around easily.

A word to the wise, make sure you don't use a standard transfer pump - it needs to be rated for fuel.

Thanks for those additional thoughts. Redonthehead, I do know we can't siphon uphill. I actually store all my fuel cans up on shelves that are elevated enough that a siphon system would work on anything we need to fill up, thus my desire to find a good solution so my wife and kids don't have to try to muscle those cans around without my help.

Because my application would be a pretty well fixed location and because I have power right there, maybe an actual pump is a better long term solution than a siphon. I'll do some more reading on this sort of setup.

There are lots of options in small 12 volt fuel pumps like Dave mentioned. probably slower volume but still faster than a gravity system?

i don't remember name. they are cheap like 3 to 15 bucks.

clear pipe up to a "small hand pump", then clear hose off of that. normally some sort of "screw cap check valve" on the hand pump. that you squeeze or press a couple times to prime the line.

kerosene, diesel, gas they are rated for.

they have a long enough pipe on them to reach majority of 5 gallon jugs of fuel. toss the jug up on top of tractor. unscrew cap on jug, and toss in transfer pump. toss hose in gas tank, give it a few squeezes, and walk away, and it will drain all but last few sips of the jug.

stay away from the battery operated units, they end up being top heavy and cause jug to fall over once it is near empty. just a simple squeeze bulb or like about all you need.
