My well is shallow about 41 ft and I can run it dry in about 2 minutes. In order to combat this I had to design a controller that will start when the casing is full, run until it is about 2 ft above the pump and then shut off until the casing is full again. It has worked out great for 3+ years now and the pump runs about 25 percent of the time. Plan to put a new one in this summer at a cost of 15.00 per ft which includes a 20' casing at the top need to get down to the next layer of limestone and into the underground lake we have in this area then I can pump all I want.

I had a problem well in California that supplied water to my home. It was 27 feet deep and the water level was at 25 feet. It had an 8" metal casing. I could pump it dry in about 5 minutes with a 4" pumping unit. So what I did was pulled out the pipe and foot valve, shot 4 rounds of 180gr .270 cal bullets down the casing with my deer rifle as far down into the well as I could hold my rifle. Presto!!! The resulting concussion broke loose all the built up corrosion in the casing, and afterwards I pumped water for 10 hours with the 4" pump and didn't pump it dry!!! If your well is old and has metal casing, I would give it a try.
