My kids like to throw rocks in the water and was down at the pond the other day and notice these rocks. I'm guessing spawning beds???

It's odd that the rocks are so centered in the depressions. Almost as if your kids are spot on rock tossers.

They look more like craters than nests. In the second pic, the right rock is oblong. So is the crater.

Displacement of silt from the thrown rocks maybe?

+1 That is my thinking as well. Easy enough to test. Throw a rock in and when the silt clears, take a look.

I'm going to guess you have fathead minnows in the pond. I have seen them do this in my pond. The males will try to clean out under a rock to attract females to spawn. If you sit still and watch you will see them.

I figure the rocks were there and something moved the sand around them. But, I've never seen that and really don't know.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
