Pond Boss Forums INTRO Questions & Observations Pond Comes Alive at Night

My new favorite pastime is walking around my pond with a flashlight at night. If you haven't done this in a while I encourage you to do so. Especially if you have young kids or grandkids. Mine love it. For example tonight we discovered that the crawfish have segregated themselves. The Red Swamp crawfish I stocked from the grocery store a few months ago (who I haven't seen any sign of until tonight) have claimed the north side of the pond as their turf. The native crawfish are all hanging out on the south side of the pond. I stocked 35 LMB 3 weeks ago and I think I saw all 35 of them swimming around the banks like sharks chasing FHM and small BG. I think my FHM must have spawned because I saw so many it is unreal. Everywhere I shined the flashlight a school of FHM would scatter out of the light. I think I also discovered that the fish in my pond prefer willow piles to cedar piles. I created several cedar brush piles a few weeks ago and don't see any fish in or around them. A few nights ago a storm knocked several willow trees and branches into the water and I saw fish all over that stuff. I say all of that to say you can learn a lot about your pond just by walking around the banks with a flashlight. Things you would never be able to see in the daytime.
