CMM's Pics...

That's a good question. I had a Rosy Red in an aquarium that developed the same condition. It lived for months but never really grew much. I was thinking it got injured somehow.

Thanks for linking the photos Bill! This one was so skinny, I don't know how much longer it would have lasted.

That deformity is actually not uncommon. What's uncommon is a fish which survives with it, to that size. It's scoliosis, most likely due to an egg hatching too quickly. Most of the time, that anomaly occurs during a late spawn, in warmest water. Happens in fish hatcheries often.

I kind of wish Scott69 was right, and I had a few more. I could get some side income from a circus or something! I have seen a few smaller fish like this. I just assumed a heron or some other injury they survived. Thanks again for all the awesome info on this forum.

I looked up scoliosis in farm raised fish. It seems that some people are using them for research on scoliosis in humans and it is sometimes related to other issues, like some types of heart irregularities. So much learning here. So many people with so much knowledge. Priceless, really.
