Our winter average is consistently below 0 degrees Fahrenheit and I have yet to have any problem keeping an 8 foot diameter or greater hole in 18-26" thick ice using aeration. (As mentioned many times on this website I don't run the diffuser/airstones at the bottom but about half depth.) Now if I tried the same thing with a waterpump/fountain I have no doubt I would have a very hard time keeping a hole open in the ice.
