Hosty, your riser pipe should be 1.5 times larger than your pipe through the dam in order to keep your flow through pipe primed and carrying a full pipe of water. 6" pipe through the dam would require a 9" riser 8" pipe through the dam would require a 12" riser This formula is applicable for any flow through pipe.
