Hosty,
How much watershed do you have? Will you also be putting in an emergency overflow spillway?

Hosty, your riser pipe should be 1.5 times larger than your pipe through the dam in order to keep your flow through pipe primed and carrying a full pipe of water.
6" pipe through the dam would require a 9" riser
8" pipe through the dam would require a 12" riser
This formula is applicable for any flow through pipe.

With only 5 ac of watershed I think you'll be fine.

Hosty,
Good you understand this is an opinion!
If you truly only have 5 ac of watershed I see no problem in holding 6" from top of dam if the dam is constructed properly .. ie dirt/clay compacted.

I would still put in spillway in the event that the pipes get closed off with debris. Stand pipe should have another pipe over to keep debis and critters out.
